What can you ask it?
- Mixing: “The kick and bass are muddy. What should I try?” You get a plan with the EQ 7-Band or Compressor/Limiter controls and values to start from.
- How-to in SoundCraft: “How do I put reverb on three tracks with one send?” Steps through the Mix window, aux tracks and sends, with menu paths such as Track › New….
- Editing: “How do I comp the best take?”, “How do I fade out the last four bars?”
- MIDI: writing a melody on an instrument track, quantizing it, choosing a sound on the Subtractive Synth.
- Shortcuts: which keys to learn first, and their Windows or Mac versions.
- Mastering basics: loudness targets and how to check them; bouncing with a LUFS readout is a desktop-app feature.
Follow-up questions keep the conversation’s context. Tell the assistant whether you use this browser version or the desktop app (a switch in the panel): the browser version can’t import audio, record, save or bounce, and the assistant knows it, so it won’t send you looking for a file dialog that isn’t there.
Why are its answers specific to SoundCraft?
A general chatbot knows Pro Tools and other DAWs, and will happily describe menus SoundCraft doesn’t have. This panel sends each question together with a reference sheet built from SoundCraft’s own source code at the released version: the 483 menu items that work (with their 101 shortcuts) and all 26 built-in plugins with every control and its range. The model is instructed to stay within that list and to say plainly when SoundCraft lacks something.
The sheet is rebuilt whenever this site moves to a new SoundCraft release, so the assistant always describes the version you are running (v0.5.0 today).
How do you use it?
- Open SoundCraft and click Ask AI in the top bar. The panel opens on the right.
- Open the settings (gear icon), choose a provider and paste your API key. The field links to the provider’s key page.
- Pick a topic (Vocal chain, Reverb on a send, Punchier drums, Automate a fade, Write a melody, Loudness, First shortcuts) or type a question, then press Ask (or Ctrl/⌘+Enter).
- Follow the steps in the app next to it. Copy an answer, download it as Markdown, or save the whole conversation.
The assistant can’t hear your audio and doesn’t operate the app; you make the changes. That keeps you in control of your mix, and it is also all a web page can do: the SoundCraft web build has no interface for other programs.
Supported providers
| Provider | Default model | Get a key |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | gpt-6.1-sol | platform.openai.com |
| Google Gemini | gemini-3.8-flash | aistudio.google.com |
| OpenRouter | google/gemini-3.8-flash | openrouter.ai |
| Custom (OpenAI-compatible) | any model your API serves | your own endpoint |
OpenAI is called through its Responses API, Gemini through generateContent, and OpenRouter through its chat completions endpoint, which reaches models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI and others. The custom option works with any service that implements OpenAI-style /chat/completions and accepts browser requests.
Privacy: what goes where
| Data | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| Your API key | Stays in your browser (for the tab, or on this device if you tick Remember). Sent only to the provider, in the request header. |
| Your questions and the conversation | Sent from your browser straight to the provider you chose. OpenAI requests ask it not to store the response. |
| Your session in SoundCraft | Never sent anywhere. The assistant doesn’t see it. |
| soundcraft.run servers | Serve the static pages and the app. They receive none of the above. |
FAQ
Does the assistant listen to my mix?
No. It reads only the question you type and the conversation so far. It can’t hear audio or see your session, so describe the problem (“the vocal disappears in the chorus”, “the kick and bass sound muddy”) and it suggests what to try.
Can it change settings or click for me?
No. The browser version of SoundCraft has no way for another program to control it, so the assistant gives you the steps, menu paths and starting values, and you apply them. Agents that drive SoundCraft directly need the desktop app and its MCP server.
How do I know it isn’t making up menu items?
Every question is sent together with SoundCraft’s own list of working menu items, shortcuts and built-in plugin controls, taken from the release’s source code, and the model is told to name only those. Models can still slip, so if a menu item doesn’t exist, say so and it will correct itself.
What does it cost?
Nothing from us. You pay your AI provider for the tokens you use. Each question carries about 5,000 tokens of SoundCraft reference material plus the conversation, so the price per question depends on the model you choose; fast, inexpensive models keep it low.
Which model should I pick?
A fast, inexpensive model answers most how-to questions well; the defaults are good starting points. For longer mixing advice, a larger model gives more careful reasoning.
